10 Wrestling Facts We Didn't Know Last Week (Nov 28)
5. WWF Locker Room Regarded Bret Hart As Back Up
It's fairly common knowledge that a lot of other wrestlers have long since viewed Bret Hart as someone who takes things very seriously. That's not something which has always appealed to his peers, because the 'Hitman' always looked to safeguard his character over the years. Even though some didn't like how serious he was, a lot of other wrestlers admired Hart's in-ring ability. In the early-1990's, Vince McMahon was interested in making Lex Luger his next pet project. Hulk Hogan's era had come and gone, and Luger was dressed in red, white and blue in order to make him the next top American babyface. The experiment didn't work, and McMahon decided to change course and go with Bret Hart - a true workhorse - as the WWF Heavyweight Champion. Sean Waltman, working as The 1-2-3 Kid, told WrestleTalk TV recently that many in the locker room looked at Bret as the back-up solution. A lot of fans have felt the same way for many years, but it's interesting to learn that wrestlers on the WWF roster saw things similarly. Luger was the first pick, but when he failed to catch on, Hart was the one McMahon knew he could fall back on. That's well-known, but it's news to learn that others in the promotion thought this way too.
