At the tail end of last week, it was reported online that WWE were interested in securing the rights to the 'Legion Of Doom' moniker once again. At the recent NXT TakeOver: The End event, legendary manager Paul Ellering made his return to the promotion, years after he had managed Hawk and Animal under the name.

Aligned with a fresh pairing, it seemed Ellering would look to recapture the LOD spark by branding his new tag-team with the infamous name. As of Monday, that plan has been abolished, because according to PWInsider, WWE have cancelled their application to trademark the title.

Older fans will remember the horrendous visual of seeing Jon Heidenreich alongside Animal, crudely calling themselves the new Legion Of Doom. It makes sense to move away from that old idea, because nobody could realistically be expected to better the achievements of The Road Warriors during their time under the gimmick.

It's too closely associated with Hawk and Animal, arguably being more of a noose around the neck of young performers than a blessing.
