10 Wrestling Gimmicks That Failed Before They Started

10. The 'Colossus of Boggo Road' Nathan Jones

An absolute monster from The Land Down Under coming to lay waste to the rank and file of the WWE? That's actually not that bad of a gimmick, when you think about it. Sure, many fans had no idea what The Colossus of Boggo Road was referring to - what/where, exactly, was Boggo Road anyway? - but the vignettes introducing the character were pretty intimidating and it looked like another Goldberg could be on the horizon. Thing is, Jones had been brought into the WWE once before in 2002, with a Hannibal Lector style gimmick which was then scrapped in favour of him becoming an understudy of sorts to The Undertaker, which was also scrapped (with Jones pulled from WrestleMania) and he was sent down to the WWE's developmental territory for more seasoning. Brought back up as The Colossus in fall 2003, things were looking up again. Boggo Road was a reference to the prison in which Jones had spent a good seven years of his life for armed robbery. After serving his sentence, he took up power lifting and achieved success in that field, furthering his hard-man image. So far, so good. Time to cash-in on reality. Sadly, Jones' ability as a wrestler hadn't improved and he kept getting gassed far too early in matches. Jones was going nowhere fast and, without impressive performances to back up the hype, the monster gimmick was a bust. Jones quit the company by the end of the year.
