10 WWE Angles That Backfired Spectacularly
1. The Muhammad Hassan Incident
Once again, it should be acknowledged that this went far worse than WWE could reasonably have been expecting. They weren't to know that a real-life terrorist attack would take place in London between taping a show and it going out on air.
But, frankly, even if it had been a normal news week, the judgement shown on the part of the writers was more than a little questionable. They must have known the sight of masked men attacking Undertaker after Muhammad Hassan had summoned them via the medium of prayer would cause some controversy.
Why did they even need to go there in the first place? There are plenty of reasons for doing evil in the realm of professional wrestling without having to invoke real-life religious and political violence.
Anyway, the point is that this angle backfired more than just about any in WWE history. Not only was the offending segment cut from subsequent international broadcasts at the request of the networks, it also effectively cost Hassan his career in the business.
