3. Triple H Beats Shawn Michaels For The European Title
http://youtu.be/NVPe5VPLCac Shawn Michaels beat the British Bulldog in England for the European title in September 1997 even though he really didn't need to and had no intention of making it a coveted title. He held it for nearly three months, even after he won the WWE Title in November 1997 at Survivor Series that year. When he faced off with his Degeneration X buddy Triple H on the December 11, 1997 edition of Raw, he finally put the European Title on the line. The match was a complete joke. Both guys took a long time stretching before the match as a way to mock the festivities. They also talked strategy with their friend Chyna, who was still in her early years in WWE and didn't talk much. Triple H ended up gently shoving Michaels down after a tie up, then he ran the ropes comically while Michaels was lying on the mat. Hunter ended up doing the worst splash in the history of the business and covered for the win. Post match, Triple H did an over the top celebration while Michaels pretended like he was sad about it. Jim Cornette and Jim Ross on commentary was ripping them for having a joke of a match. Cornette took a shot at Michaels for crying, which was a reference to his "I lost my smile" speech from earlier that year. At least Triple H benefited from winning the European Title and did his best to make it seem valuable in the months ahead. It was never meant to be a serious match. It was the definition of a match being a joke.
