10 WWE PPVs Which Drew Lower-Than-Expected Buyrates (And Why)
7. WrestleMania XIX - 560,000 Buys
WrestleMania XIX is often considered a forgotten classic. The show boasted a technically excellent main event that pitted Olympic Gold Medalist Kurt Angle against NCAA Champion Kurt Angle, Shawn Michaels's WrestleMania return bout against Chris Jericho, and the last-ever meeting between The Rock and Steve Austin. The reason why it's forgotten by so many, though, is because it was seen by so few - barely more than half a million fans ordered the show, making it the least-watched 'Mania of the past two decades.
It's hard to know exactly what went wrong, though WWE management placed the blame on the fact that the show was held in the Pacific Northwest (if you're thinking that that doesn't make any sense, good catch). The likeliest reason for the poor showing is that the most hyped bout on the card - a narcissistic bit of nonsense pitting Vince McMahon against Hulk Hogan - didn't resonate with fans. Needless to say, they weren't going to be taking the blame, so it must have been the region.
