10 WWE Reunions That Were False Dawns
3. The Spirit Squad (2016)
Hands up if you wanted a Spirit Squad return in 2016?
Nope, not too many of you knew at the time, but the SmackDown feud between The Miz and Dolph Ziggler in 2016 was going to take us to some places we didn't realise we wanted to go.
Ziggler found himself in a losing attempt to wrestle the Intercontinental Title from The Miz at Backlash. This forced Ziggler to bargain for one last shot: if he lost, he would retire. Miz would go on to goad the Show-off with a fake 'documentary' showing off his lowest ebbs in the WWE. It was after this that The Miz would introduce Ziggler's former teammates from...The Spirit Squad.
It was a swerve that no one saw coming: Kenny and Mikey teaming with The Miz to deal out punishment on the former Nicky.
The Spirit Squad alumni attempted to distract Ziggler in his career threatening match at No Mercy, yet couldn't seal the deal as Ziggler won to claim the Intercontinental Championship.
Kenny and Mikey would go on to appear for a few more weeks after this, clashing with Ziggler in a handicap match before even challenging Rhyno and Heath Slater for the Smackdown LIVE Tag Team Championships.
The two could obviously still go but the little momentum that pushed them through their impactful return didn't last long. They were deemed surplus to requirements and released in November.
