10 WWE Superstars Who Were Probably Scientologists

8. CM Punk As The Straight Edge Society Leader - WWE, 2010

During CM Punk's WWE tenure, the company oftentimes saw the money apparent in CM Punk's choice of an abstinence-based "straight edge" lifestyle. In WWE storylines, when contemplating championship matches, straight edge certainly made CM Punk better than Jeff Hardy. However, insofar as further options, with so much of "straight edge" being tied up in punk rock history and there being many various types of ways that one can practice being "straight edge," it was a nuanced belief systems that WWE just never completely saw fit to understand. WWE's official moment of throwing up their hands (but not in an X) came when they paired Punk with Luke Gallows, Serena Deeb and Joey Matthews as the Straight Edge Society. Instead of being bad-ass abstainers who lived by a rogue moral code, the Straight Edge Society often times came off like a punk rock Scientology sect than anything else. Punk asking his followers to shave their heads and accept straight edge certainly sounds like accepting, then removing one's past indiscretions. As well, with Wikipedia's allusion to Scientologists being accused of brainwashing, routinely defrauding its members, and harassing its critics and perceived enemies with psychological abuse and character assassination, it certainly would appear that the Straight Edge Society definitely was more about Scientology than straight edge has ever proven to have been.
