WrestleMania 31 was in some ways looking like a no-win situation. Part timer Brock Lesnar came into the event WWE World Heavyweight Champion, despite only a handful of appearances and defences during his 224 day reign. Roman Reigns, fresh off his Royal Rumble win, came into the event as a near universally despised face that the fans saw as the guy being forced down their throats by the company.

The stage appeared to be set for a Roman Reigns coronation set to massive boos. But Vince McMahon had an ace up his sleeve. Towards the end of the match, Seth Rollins’ music hit and Levi’s Stadium came unglued. After cashing in his Money in the Bank briefcase and leaving as the champion, Rollins began a 220 day reign as champion, carrying the company on his back until an unfortunate knee injury sidelined him for over 6 months.

After a lightning fast recovery and an inspirational WWE Network documentary, Rollins made a surprise appearance at Extreme Rules, laying out the still unpopular Reigns to the delight of the fans inside the Prudential Center. The stage was set for Rollins to ride the momentum of fan support as a de-facto face in pursuit of regaining the title that he never lost.

Instead, the company made the inexplicable decision to turn Rollins heel the next night on Raw in order to set up a match with Roman at the next PPV. Possibly realizing the error of their ways three months later, Rollins turned face when HHH returned and pedigreed him to allow Kevin Owens to become Universal Champion, taking Rollins place as the Authority’s golden boy.

For a variety of reasons, (notably Rollins being such a great despicable heel) Rollins face turn hasn’t garnered the mega reactions the company had been hoping for. Their bungled handling of his valiant return from injury effectively dashed any hopes for a top face run. Rollins would be better suited at this point turning heel again until the company can figure out a more compelling reason for him to turn face, thereby giving the fans more of a reason to cheer him.
