Chad Gable had found himself in a very difficult position in mid-2017. Gable had lost his half of the SmackDown LIVE Tag Team Championships in March, had a disappointing showing in the Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royal at 'Mania 33 and failed to recapture gold, alongside American Alpha team-mate Jason Jordan, from The Usos.

Therefore, when he turned up on the June 20th edition of the blue brand to answer Kevin Owens' United States Championship Open Challenge, the fans weren't exactly expecting an upset. Little did they know that this Gable had turned up to cause a stir and unleashed a barrage of suplexes, showcasing his Olympic-level amateur background.

Quick as the match may have been, Gable got enough of his expertise into the contest to leave a lasting impression on the crowd and, even in defeat, gave us a glimpse of what a serious singles push could entail for the starlet. After a limp couple of months, this match came completely out of the blue.
