100 Greatest WWE Matches Of All Time (Ranked)
61. Randy Savage vs. Ricky Steamboat (WrestleMania III)
This Intercontinental Title classic was considered the best match in WrestleMania history for years. Being brutally honest, the bar wasn't set particularly high for single digit events in the series. Only a handful of matches between 'Mania I-X could come close to matching what Randy Savage and Ricky Steamboat accomplished in the old (and cavernous) Pontiac Silverdome.
There's a good reason why people adored this match so much, and why they continue to do so in the modern era. If anything, some will be outraged that it's so criminally low, but there are just so many stellar bouts to choose from in the WWE archives. Besides, Savage vs. Steamboat defo benefitted from the comparatively weak array of matches Vince McMahon's group put on elsewhere at the time in 1987.
Nothing on the 'Mania III card was even going to come close to this, Hulk Hogan vs. Andre The Giant included. That was more spectacle than anything else, whereas Randy vs. Ricky was a good old fashioned wrasslin' match with serious sizzle to go along with their workmanlike effort between the ropes.
George Steele and Miss. Elizabeth worked their respective parts well from ringside, but Savage and Steamboat stole the show by delivering a compact and tidy IC Title match which set the tone for the belt's aura going forwards. Chris Jericho has revealed that he and friends often play-wrestled this entire bout move for move at home. That's how much of a splash it made with people.
Also, you've got to love that small package finish and the momentous crowd pop that came after the ref's hand hit three. A highlight from the WWFs 1980s.
