100 Greatest WWE Matches Of All Time (Ranked)
52. Mick Foley vs. Edge (WrestleMania 22)
A. Barbed. Wire. Sock.
Mick Foley used that on Edge for a highspot in the pair's acclaimed hardcore match at WrestleMania 22. Almost eerily, that wasn't even the most painful thing the duo did that night. Edge infamously speared Foley off the ring apron through a flaming table, and longtime ECW announcer Joey Styles couldn't help himself by yelling his, "Oh My GOD" line at the top of his lungs (Joey probs wasn't thankful to co-host Jerry Lawler for saying it first!).
This was everything fans looking forward to Mick vs. Edge had hoped it would be going in. Foley was back to his big bump best, and Edge was en route to becoming a bonafide WWE headliner who clicked as an easy-to-detest 'Rated-R Superstar' heel. Together, they meshed well as characters, and they had a lot in common behind the scenes as wrestling minds too; there were few risks these dudes weren't willing to take if it meant entertaining fans.
Seeing Edge go into shock as Foley writhed around post-table bump is still one of the most dramatic WWE scenes ever. The pain was surely very real, but both guys did a neat job putting across how close they'd come to death. Somehow, they rolled back into the ring for more punishment before the finishing pin.
Edge went face first into the fire, so he deserves a ton of praise for having nuts the size of skyscrapers. Foley deserved a pat on the back (a gentle one, because he had to be in agony) for putting his peer over so strongly. What a fight.
