59. DDP And The Magic Crystal
William Regal once had everyone laughing by saying the nonsense that went on under the umbrella of WCW? Unbelievable. However, even top decision makers in Atlanta weren't keen to go along with Hardbody Harrison's pitch to have Diamond Dallas Page carry around a magic crystal which he'd then steal.
Quick word on Hardbody. He was a journeyman pro who was subsequently jailed for life due to charges including sex trafficking, forced labour and more. That's just the tip of the iceberg. A horrendous individual, Harrison didn't have much of a wrestling legacy to tarnish, but it's still worth pointing out his ghastly behaviour away from the ring.
Back to WCW. There, Hardbody thought it'd be cool if DDP had a crystal he'd nab then throw into a giant piranha tank on pay-per-view. One of the lures for that PPV would then be Page diving in to risk death and retrieve his prized possession. Yeah, this kinda makes Bret Hart and Jean-Pierre LaFitte fighting over a jacket in 1995 look like pulsating, grounded television by comparison.
Unsurprisingly (but maybe a wee splash surprising given their track record), management guffawed at Harrison's plan. It'd be a shocker if DDP was eager to go along with it himself. He was surely a rising star when this happened, and feuding with top names like Randy Savage and the nWo was one million times better than literally swimming with the fishes.
Some of the nonsense wrestlers come up with should be studied. Thankfully, Hardbody didn't have the backstage political stroke to make this Crystal Maze rip off WCW's reality.
