55. Too Cool Almost Beat Billy & Chuck

In theory, that's something Brian Christopher or Scott Taylor would've said to one another had they worked a gay wedding years before Billy Gunn and Chuck Palumbo. OK, maybe not, because the duo were known as Too Much back in 1998 and hadn't launched into their cherished Too Cool gimmick just yet.
Apparently, Vince Russo thought up the wedding bid as a means to get Too Much (who were little more than a lower tier tag-team act at the time) some notoriety and heat from the audience. This hasn't been confirmed, but there's a chance that Jerry Lawler (Christopher's dad) requested the WWF halt their plans and do something else instead.
Indirectly, that led to the Too Cool pivot and turned the duo into an unlikely babyface smash hit. Rikishi even joined them to don some shades and shake his butt for the entertainment of millions watching Raw and SmackDown every week. Together, the trio even brought the 2000 Royal Rumble match to a standstill so they could jig about.
Billy and Chuck would assume the wedding angle years later in 2002, but it angered many when WWE didn't go through with the vows or promote the couple as positive role models. It was a bait and switch, in short. Maybe that would've been the same with Too Much, who knows?
The future Scotty 2 Hotty and Grandmaster Sexay did pat one another on the behind and share some similar 'we're in love' tropes to Gunn and Palumbo in '98. They just flew a little further under the radar because they weren't as heavily featured on TV.
