43. Test Leaves Stephanie At The Altar

The 29 November 1999 episode of Raw Is War will forever be remembered for Triple H gatecrashing Stephanie McMahon's wedding vows with Test and revealing that he was already married to the boss's daughter. They'd been hitched at a drive-thru in Las Vegas, and everyone was stunned. Stunned, we say. Apoplectic. It was mass hysteria.
It was also the beginning of the end for Test's main event push. He was elbowed out of the road so Hunter could take centerstage in the McMahon-Helmsley Regime. Before he left for WCW in October, head writer Vince Russo had a much different thought in mind, and it'd have left poor Stephanie standing all alone at the altar.
Russo believed in sticking Test right in the thick of it as a new D-Generation X member. In theory, he'd have benefitted hugely from joining one of the biggest factions on the planet, but it would've rocked the balance of DX a tad. After all, Trips was the top star, whilst other members like the New Age Outlaws and X-Pac had filled roles further down the card.
If the WWF wanted to push Test hard, then he'd have likely encroached on some of Hunter's business, and that wouldn't do. Ultimately, they went with Stephanie fleeing with Hunter and forming an offshoot group away from the D-Generation X nest. Meanwhile, Test formed a tag with Albert and allied with Trish Stratus on the undercard.
What could've been for him, huh? Test in DX would've been interesting. Flawed, most probably, but interesting.
