2004 was the year Eddie Guerrero showed he belonged at the top of the tree. He won the WWE Title from Brock Lesnar at No Way Out, then tangled with Kurt Angle at 'Mania XX before expertly putting fellow main event newbie JBL over as SmackDown's top heel for much of the summer.

Come the end of '04, WWE's writers planned to shunt Guerrero into the tag-team division for a while before he refocused his efforts on the World Heavyweight Title. Thus, Armageddon was his final stab at the biggest belt available. It came in a match nobody really stops to ponder today.

JBL was champ going into a Fatal-4-Way vs. Eddie, The Undertaker and Booker T. One of the best spots came via Guerrero's magnificent facial expressions as reborn zombie 'Taker sat up in trademark fashion. 'Latino Heat' always had a distinctive way of selling that sort of thing.

He'd never challenge for the WWE Title again after this. Not on Raw, not on SmackDown, not on pay-per-views and not even on house shows. Fans didn't know it at the time, but this humble Armageddon 4-Way was about to hit the history books as soon as it finished.

A year later, Eddie was gone. His death knocked the entire wrestling world hard; he's fondly remembered as one of the best to ever lace up a pair of boots. If only he'd been able to hold the top prize just one more time.

It wasn't to be, which only makes Armageddon's effort an essential revisit.
