When Edge successfully defended his World Title against Alberto Del Rio at WrestleMania 27, nobody imagined it was the end of his WWE career. The match had been decent and Edge had looked good. The next week on Raw, he came out in the penultimate segment, looking sombre and reflective. He then proceeded to cut a promo from the heart, talking about how painful the business can be and the toll it had taken on his body. He ran through his career highlights and got emotional. It was clearly not a scripted angle. He said he was retiring, following the advice of doctors after WrestleMania. He said his neck had always been on borrowed time, and now he had no choice.
