We’ve seen this happen before: An under-utilized superstar that fans support starts to rack up a few wins and seemingly is on the verge of breaking through to superstardom, only to smack into a wall (or a glass ceiling) and plummet back to the mid-card, trading wins with other wrestlers in a sort of purgatory. The wrestler might get heated up again, but he never quite makes it to the next level.

Cesaro is probably one of the best examples of this start-and-stop push approach, as he was given a major moment at WrestleMania XXX two years ago, winning the first Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royal. His push was shortly abandoned and he was put into a subpar tag team. A couple attempts to break through faltered until he got injured just at a time when it looked like he would finally be taken seriously.

But now, Cesaro is on a roll and poised to win the Intercontinental Championship. With a shortage of bona fide stars and fans flocking back to the Swiss Superman, now would be the perfect time to strike with a major push. But is this the real deal? It’s something we’ll have to keep an eye on from week to week.

Scott is a former journalist and longtime wrestling fan who was smart enough to abandon WCW during the Monday Night Wars the same time as the Radicalz. He fortunately became a fan in time for WrestleMania III and came back as a fan after a long high school hiatus before WM XIV. Monday nights in the Carlson household are reserved for viewing Raw -- for better or worse.
