Sting's most memorable gimmick has been a blatant rip off of a gothic horror comic adaptation, obviously the Brandon Lee vehicle The Crow. If you've forgotten The Crow, or been blinded by the bad sequels, go back to the original and give it another look. The revenge from beyond the grave film is absolutely brilliant. There's no doubt Sting recognized that fact, and when it came time to move away from his surfer Sting look, well... The Crow was ripe for the plucking. It also made a certain sort of sense. Sting had (in storyline) been betrayed by WCW, and left. When he returned, it was a loner, out for vengeance, and the movie character was the perfect fit. While he wasn't back from the grave, he was certainly reborn. Scott Hall was the one who suggested he move in this character direction. Again, this is one of the gimmicks that blatantly ripped-off the movies. Sure, they changed the backstory a little, but it was pretty obvious. Given the success of the character, however, he gets a pass, unlike some others on the list.
