12 Huge WWE Dream Matches That Were Supposed To Happen But Didn’t

9. Chris Benoit Vs CM Punk (Vengeance 2007)

The creation of the ECW Title was cause for optimism for fans of the product. The show had not been a smash hit with fans of the original ECW or regular WWE fans who viewed it is a watered-down version of Raw or Smackdown. The inaugural champion was to be crowned via a four man tournament featuring CM Punk, Elijah Burke, Marcus Cor Von and Chris Benoit. Punk and Benoit advanced to the finals and the match was set for the Vengeance PPV. Anticipation was high for the meeting between the grizzled veteran and the rising star. Both men were internet darlings and many people predicted the match would steal the show. Only Benoit never turned up to the arena that night. Over the weekend he had killed his wife, his son and then himself. It was one of the biggest tragedies the wrestling business had ever seen. Johnny Nitro replaced Benoit in the match and won the title but the result was of little consequence when the news broke about the Benoit murders the following day.
