12 Super Weird Quirks Unique To ONE Wrestler
5. Bret’s Chest First Corner Charge
Here's something a tad more important.
Bret would eat the turnbuckles chest first like he looked forward to it, and it always seemed like he’d run into a brick wall. Admittedly, several wrestlers have added this to their arsenal since, but nobody does it like Hart did, and no-one really used it during his prime. It was his spot.
Hell, even if someone like Duke 'The Dumpster' Droese had started charging into the corner like he was trying to move the ring several inches, people would've rejected it and said he was only copying the 'Hitman'. Curt Hennig used a similar spot to great effect, but his go to sell was going back first into the corner then rocketing straight back out into a flip bump.
Hart didn't do that. He went for something a little more measured, but just as impactful. It probably didn't hurt him at all, but it sure looked like Bret's sternum was caved in every time he took that bump full blast. The clunky sound of those old WWF rings (only modernised during the 'Attitude Era') also helped put across what storyline pain the Canadian hero was suffering through.
This is definitely where somebody points out that an undercard wrestler on ROH does the chest first bump in 2026. Fair enough, but it'd be a huge shocker if it came anywhere close to Bret's handiwork. He knew the best way to take the hit without causing maximum damage, and announcers got a real kick out of claiming that he'd shifted the ring '7 or 8 inches' whenever he did it.
What a world class worker, man. Responsible for some of the greatest WWE matches ever.
