12 Ups & 4 Downs From Last Night's WWE SmackDown (May 28)
7. Bayley & Lacey Get It Right
Lacey Evans is growing. The past few months have seen her go from complete main roster catastrophe (that Royal Rumble showcase was a disaster) to solid midcard heel, and while it's still too early for her to be playing a prominent role near the top of the card, she deserves credit for her progress. 'The Sassy Southern Belle' is getting there faster than most hot-shotted developmental call-ups. It won't be long before she becomes the wrestler WWE want her to be.
Evans collided with Bayley last night, and, post-match aside, it was everything it needed to be. They worked a textbook momentum seesaw format with the action neat and tidy, the fundamentals solid, and the roles clearly defined. Bayley is excelling as a more confident character now that she has the belt, and her opponent is starting to put it together as a controlling heel. Sometimes, that's all you need for a decent bout.
The finish keeps Lacey semi-protected, too. The execution was a little sloppy, but Evans was too slow to capitalise on Charlotte's distraction, leading to Bayley escaping her attempted roll-up before scoring one of her own, thus leaving ample heat on the table for a rematch later down the line.
