12 Wrestlers Who Benefited From Their WWE Release

3. Rey Mysterio

Another potentially contentious entry given the tragic Perro Aguayo Jr. incident, but Rey Mysterio was miserable towards the end of his WWE run. His World Championship days long behind him, the ageing Cruiserweight found himself hamstrung by injuries and bound by a contract extended against his will, but finally secured his release in 2015.

Working primarily for Mexico’s AAA promotion and Lucha Underground since his departure, Mysterio doesn’t perform on a mainstream American stage any more, but he’s making good money and working on his own terms, and that’s all he ever wanted.
