13 Things We Learned From Dark Side Of The Ring: Daffney

1. The Vicky Lyons Story Will Make You Cry

The final portion of the episode was dedicated to the memory of Vicky Lyons. She was hit by a truck as a young girl and suffered horrendous facial injuries that defined the rest of her life. Mick Foley recalled seeing a documentary about her story on Forensic Files, and he was so touched that he Google’d to find out more information.

That’s when Mick saw “Vicky Lyons vs. Daffney wrestling match” in the search results staring back at him. He thought, “No way”. It was true. Shannon had agreed to train Vicky to the best of her abilities and let her live the dream of wrestling a proper match. It obviously wasn’t the best work in the world due to Vicky’s limited physical capabilities, but it was a lovely gesture from somebody who truly cared about helping others.

Foley called it “one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever seen in our sport, and I’ve been around a long time”.

Better still, Shannon surprised Vicky by putting her over for the win. Mick: “In that match I see everything that’s good and right about professional wrestling”. Vicky sadly passed away herself in 2011, but she did get to scratch an itch after training for five long years on and off with Spruill.

A quick clip of Lyons baring her soul in the face of cruel taunting will have tears falling all over again. It definitely affected Foley, but he's glad Vicky got to wrestle, and he's proud of Shannon for making that a reality when it seemed like an impossible dream.
