13 Things We Learned From Dark Side Of The Ring: Daffney

6. Concussions Amplified Her Bi-Polar Disorder

One of the most emotional bits in the entire show came when VICE aired Shannon telling interviewers in 2012 that she didn't think she'd be able to wrestle anymore. There was a crack in her voice as she came to terms with potentially waving goodbye to the industry due to health concerns. " I just don't think people really realise how bad I've been hurt".

Spruill actually stepped away from the ring in 2011, so that interview must've been taped shortly afterwards and laid bare someone struggling to accept defeat. That's when her dad Quentin and other family members/friends put their foot down and said enough was enough - she simply couldn't be allowed back into the ring for her own good. For TNA, WWE or anyone else.

Simple as that.

Remarkably, Shannon agreed with that, so she must've been in a bad way. The concussions she'd suffered were actually amplifying her bi-polar disorder and making things worse. It would've been reckless of anybody to let Spruill wrestle full-time again. Someone had to intervene, lay things out for her fairly and then help Shannon come to the correct decision.

The true effects of CTE are downright scary. Combine that with bi-polar and some of the side effects of medication she was taking and Spruill's brain chemistry must've been all over the place. She just wasn't in the right frame of mind or physically capable of performing at a high enough level to make the risk worth it.

Learning a little about how concussions worsen bi-polar was one of the more shocking takeaways from the doc.
