Bret Hart’s slow burn heel turn from the ashes of 1996 into 1997 is a thing of beauty to witness at any point of the year, but it’ll feel like a Christmas gift if you watch it with a mince pie in one hand and a remote in the other. The 'Hitman' interrupted a hotly contested Owen Hart vs. Davey Boy Smith match on the 31 March episode of Raw to bring them back onside.

He blamed the fans for making them feud since 1992, which was genius. When Bret asked Owen to look him in the eye and reminisced about dressing his younger brother for school or making sure he made it onto the school bus every morning, the promo was made. They reformed a new look Hart Foundation, drafted in Jim Neidhart and Brian Pillman, then led a crusade of excellence aplenty for the rest of the year.

A timeless main event on In Your House: Calgary Stampede, Bret vs. Undertaker at SummerSlam with HBK as special guest ref, and more - the fun goes all the way up to the screwjob at Survivor Series ’97. All of it is both compelling and drenched in top quality inside the ring. How could you go wrong with workers as skilled as Bret, Owen and Davey on the heel side, or characters like Shawn, 'Taker and Steve Austin warring with them?!

That 31 March '97 Raw is up there on Netflix if you need to see Bret's promo from first word to last. It's some watch, and that was only the beginning.

Top Recommendation: Calgary Stampede remains a thumping pay-per-view on the whole, but the 10-man tag main event is what people revisit the show for. It was an instant classic.
