News spread that both Brock Lesnar and Bill Goldberg would be leaving WWE with immediate effect after WrestleMania XX before the match had even happened. Meanwhile, ridiculously popular hero Steve Austin was announced as the special guest referee/enforcer for this mega-clash between two of the best powerhouses in the game. Stop us here if you can spot the flaw in this sequence of events.

'Mania XX was also in known WWF/WWE hot bed Madison Square Garden, and the New York faithful were about to let Bill and Brock know exactly what they thought about both departing. Boos would ring out as soon as they hit the ring, and the MSG faithful trolled these former World Champions with chants about selling out. When they weren't doing that, the Garden was not-so-politely telling Goldberg and Lesnar that they sucked.

Nearby, Austin appeared to be loving every single second. He was the darling of MSG that night (nothing new there), and 'Stone Cold' couldn't resist flashing a cheeky little smile every now and then. Goldberg and Brock weren't smiling. Far from it. They went through the motions to have a so-so power-based tussle, then clearly couldn't wait to get out of there and onto their next projects away from WWE.

It was an embarrassing night for the duo. Thankfully, they'd put things right in 2016 and 2017 by having matches befitting of their rivalry, but 2004's effort was a phoned-in mess that played in front of a rebellious live crowd. Anybody with common sense could've predicted that this would end in disaster ahead of time.

It did.
