The word "shockingly" is doing a lot of heavy lifting in that sub-heading, let's be real.

In theory, a straight up fight between Ronda Rousey and Shayna Baszler didn't sound like the worst thing in the world. After all, both had MMA roots, and both were real-life pals behind the curtain. Surely, if nothing else, they'd be keen to put on a show and have some fun out there at SummerSlam 2023. If they did and that was their intentions, then something went fundamentally wrong with this "MMA Rules" match.

It was one of the most lifeless bouts of the entire year, and would definitely qualify as one of the worst undercard SummerSlam matches in history. That's honestly saying something when pearlers like The Undertaker vs. Giant Gonzalez (1993), Alexa Bliss vs. Eva Marie (2021) and Ivory vs. Tori (1999) exist in the WWE archives. Stick those on the WWE Vault YouTube channel! Or don't.

Fans inside Detroit's Ford Field snoozed their way through the entire thing. It lasted less than 10 minutes, but Ronda vs. Shayna felt like it went on for 10 years. What's more, the MMA exchanges between them didn't look very slick at all, so the bout didn't even have credible action going for it either.

This would prove to be a sorry way for Rousey to bow out of the WWE spotlight. Truthfully, she only briefly looked like a great addition to the roster (right at the start!), and there was always a disconnect between 'Rowdy' and the pro wrestling fanbase that was hard to overlook.
