By 2000, the once-proud World Championship Wrestling was a car crash company riddled with inconsistencies, confusing creative decisions and some of the worst wrestling fans had ever seen from a major outfit. Somehow, programming that year still makes for a banter-filled watch if you go in knowing it'll be silly and don't take things too seriously.

After all, nobody can claim that WCW themselves were taking things seriously. If they were, then they wouldn't have booked this truly pathetic bit of 'when wrestling goes real' content at New Blood Rising that August. During a three-way pitting Goldberg vs. Kevin Nash vs. Scott Steiner, Bill sandbagged Nash's powerbomb attempt and left the ring. Then, he had an argument with head booker Vince Russo as fans looked on baffled.

The announcers criticised Goldberg for going off-script and being unprofessional (?!), then applauded Steiner for thinking on his feet to come up with a new finish to the match. Man, who was this even for? It was one of the worst WCW moments ever. Generally, people buying tickets for pay-per-views or watching them from home don't want to be told that wrestlers are ignoring the script or that every match is a work. Fans already know it is, but let them suspend disbelief and enjoy the ride.

That isn't much to ask.

Some had been worried in the weeks leading up to New Blood Rising when WCW experimented with more of this clumsy behind the scenes stuff, but everything came to a head on the actual pay-per-view itself. It was even worse than Russo's biggest critics could've guessed.
