The "T.A." in Magnum's name denotes Terry Allen, which is the guy's real name. He looked enough like Tom Selleck -- they both had mustaches, you see -- that it was worth an official name change. He wasn't "Magnum T.A." Terry Allen, he was "Magnum T.A.", plain and simple, then and forever, his persona linked to a goofy, Hawaii-based detective series. But what if the show suddenly stopped being a cultural touchstone?

T.A.'s career ended tragically thanks to a horrific 1986 car wreck, two years before his namesake detective series went off the air. Had Mr. Allen stayed healthy into the 1990's, pop-culture-conscious promoters would have had to shave his carefully-sculpted mustache, get fitted for a bolo tie and turn him into Walker, T.A.xeas Ranger.

I'll be here all week.
