The night after WrestleMania X-8 saw the debut of a man who would go on to have one of the most incredible careers in professional fighting of all time. He would be WWE Undisputed Champion within six months of his debut, and would go on to win the top prize in New Japan Pro Wrestling and the UFC as well. I'm talking of course about Brock Lesnar, who on March 18th 2002 was unveiled to the world as the hottest rookie in pro wrestling.

His first victims will go down forever as pub quiz answers, as Lesnar came through the crowd to attack Al Snow, Maven and Spike Dudley during whatever three-way classic those guys were having at the time. Lesnar's attacks would continue, as this monster of a man threw around smaller WWF competitors like rag dolls.

Knowing what he would go on to become, seeing Lesnar's debut is a fascinating watch. It's difficult to try and put yourself into the shoes of the 2002 viewer, seeing what could have been just another flash in the pan monster. Lesnar's aura was different, even here.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
