25 Worst Wrestling Moments Of 2020
13. WWE Set Edge & Randy Orton Up To Fail
You just knew this was coming next after the monster mash.
If this was a collection of 2020's finest moments, then Edge's emotional return at the Royal Rumble would be threatening to take top spot. His comeback took everyone by surprise, and hopes were high when he launched into a full-blown feud with an old pal: Randy Orton. They'd battle at WrestleMania 36 and at Backlash.
No, the 'Mania clash between these prior Rated-RKO partners was nothing special, but it wasn't terrible either. Edge was clearly still feeling his way back into things and shaking off years of ring rust, and the weird atmosphere at 36 meant they couldn't lean on a live crowd to do some of the heavy lifting.
So, not an awful start, but then came some of the most out there hyperbole you'll ever see. WWE got stupid by branding Backlash's rematch as "The Greatest Wrestling Match Ever” before reaching the 14 June PLE. This ridiculous claim put maximum pressure on both to live up to something they never could. It's really as simple as that.
Thankfully, neither Edge nor Orton repeated the tagline ad nauseam heading into Backlash. How could they maintain a straight face whilst doing that?! No wrestler should say, 'This is going to be the best match ever' before it happens. That isn't even the object, in theory. They're supposed to try and win as quickly as possible.
WWE definitely set 2 legends up to fail, and that was unacceptable when Edge had only just returned to action. He certainly didn't need further pressure before what was only his third match since 2011.
