25 Worst Wrestling Moments Of 2020
6. Rey Mysterio “Loses An Eye”
Did you know? Rey Mysterio has been wrestling with one eye missing since 19 July 2020. Except he hasn't. WWE won't even mention his 'Eye For An Eye' match with Seth Rollins from the Horror Show At Extreme Rules card nowadays. It existed in a parallel universe known as the Performance Center of 2020.
Much of what happened there didn't escape the training facility's walls.
Going into Extreme Rules, the malicious Rollins had promised to remove one of Rey's eyes for reasons best known to himself. Firing back, Mysterio said that it'd be Seth who'd have to rock an eye patch forevermore. Going OTT with match hype had been prevalent since "The Greatest Wrestling Match Ever" between Randy Orton and Edge, but this was getting out of hand.
There was no way WWE could deliver on the stipulation for Rey vs. Seth. Not properly. Come the finish, Rollins hit his stomp to Mysterio on the ringside steps, and that apparently caused one of the masked man's eyes to pop out of its socket - Rey could be seen holding a small fleshy thing as he feigned agony, and Seth puked his guts up as refs put a stop to the fight.
Obviously, Mysterio hadn't watched Vader vs. Stan Hansen and didn't know you could shove that eyeball back in the socket without a care in the world. Needs to study his pro wrestling history, that lad.
The eye removal was outlandish in the extreme (perhaps fittingly given the PPV name), and there was no way WWE's writers were going to keep it going post-show.
