Some WWE storylines push boundaries, but few plummeted to the depths of depravity quite like the Katie Vick fiasco of October 2002. What should have been a major World Heavyweight/Intercontinental title unification match at that month's No Mercy pay-per-view was overshadowed by an absurd, tasteless, and downright disturbing sex-and-death angle that instantly became one of the most reviled in company history.

At the time, Triple H was firmly establishing himself as Raw’s power-hungry tyrant, having been gifted the World Heavyweight Championship by Eric Bischoff before crushing Rob Van Dam’s title aspirations. His next target was Kane, who had been riding high on a babyface resurgence as Intercontinental Champion. With Bischoff deciding that his show could only have one singles champion, the two were set to clash, but what followed defied all logic and taste.

Over the course of three weeks, 'The Game' unleashed a grotesque smear campaign, accusing 'The Big Red Machine' of murdering a woman named Katie Vick, then alleging that he had sex with her corpse. WWE didn’t stop there. In one of the most infamous segments ever aired, Hunter as Kane was shown in a funeral home, simulating necrophilia with a mannequin in a casket before gleefully declaring that he had “screwed her brains out.”

Despite unifying the titles at No Mercy, Triple H’s victory was an afterthought. The match was irrelevant - WWE had already cemented this storyline as one of the darkest, most regrettable chapters in wrestling history.
