Almost as painful to watch as it must have been to absorb, Michaels' gruesome back bump in a brave performance - even if the fear of a backstage kicking at the taped-up hands of The Undertaker allegedly drove it - proved that, even at his most unprofessional in the backstage context, he was too prideful a performer to mirror his worst onscreen (or, more accurately, in the ring). He literally threw himself into putting over Austin big as a powerhouse brawler.

With a siege mentality in place at the height of the Monday Night Wars, in a collaborative environment, all performers on the roster - even Michaels - pulled together for the greater good.
