4 Ups And 4 Downs From Last Night’s WWE NXT (June 10)

3. Funny Segments Backstage

After years of enduring WWE's 'sense' of 'humour', when fans hear about backstage comedy segments they would be forgiven for not getting Mojo-levels of hyped. But NXT's writers are better than that and there were three backstage segments last night that had moments of genuine comedy. I'm not sure who's writing Enzo, Cass and Carmella's material, or whether they're writing it themselves like in the glory days of promos, but whoever it is has got their voice down pat. In terms of promos, they're one of the best outfits in the whole company, being fresh, funny and charismatic all at once. Enzo in particular is spitting imagery with such sharp timing and emphasis that it's like watching a rapper on top of his game, and his mad-eyed riffing on the Hunger Games was hilarious. Jason Jordan and Chad Gable continued their bizarre Fatal Attraction-esque "bromance" backstage. It's difficult to pin down exactly what's happening here. They seem to be antagonising each other, but Gable keeps trying to give Jordan towels, and then wrote his name on Jordan's locker in a move that was affectionate to the point of being pretty creepy, you guys. It's weird, but not necessarily in a bad way, and Jordan's line of "where do you keep getting these" re. Gable's towels was amusing. Finally, who knew Bull Dempsey had comedy chops? His new 'out of shape' gimmick may end up being a terrible move for his once-intimidating character, but he's so far performing it well. In a backstage segment with William Regal he deadpanned making excuses for his lack of physical prowess whilst tucking into a bag of Doritos. Again, this is really dumb, but there was something genuinely funny about the way he ate those chips. If the writers can keep all their comedy moments on this side of silly, rather than the main roster's vomiting-in-a-hat level of lulz, then fans may relish rather than dread the odd moment of levity between matches.
