31. 2010 - Stand Up For WWE Launches Alongside Linda McMahon’s Run For Senate
In 2010, Linda McMahon ran for senate in a bid to represent the state of Connecticut.
To tremendous personal financial cost, she failed dismally. After narrowly fending off a Republican rival who had barely bothered to campaign until the fortnight before the primary, Linda was defeated by Democrat Richard Blumenthal in the 2011 general election. She’d get there in the end, but in 2010, she was as good at politics as she was doing literally anything with her blank face.
She ploughed millions upon millions of dollars into her campaign, which WWE indirectly assisted with a public relations initiative. You see, what with all those pesky deaths that kept following the company around, its name wasn’t…amazing in mainstream media circles. These tragic, grisly incidents were often invoked by the media and her competitors.
So, WWE urged you all to ‘Stand Up’ for it. You were asked, among other things, to upload videos to social media explaining why you were a fan, befriend WWE on Facebook, and even write to your local newspaper if you felt their reporting was inaccurate.
The funniest request for what was a bold-faced laughing stock of a move was “email your friends and family explaining why you were a WWE fan”. Imagine contacting some long-lost uncle, out of nowhere, to enthusiastically endorse Ted DiBiase, Jr. going over John Morrison in a two minute, 17 second effort on the July 26 Raw. Somebody probably did this!
This was really quite bad - WWE was an ugly place that hardly deserved this kind of protest - but it was ultimately too funny to clutch your pearls over.
