5 Reasons You Should Be Watching NWA Powerrr

The future of wrestling lies in its past.

The National Wrestling Alliance.

There was a time when that name sent shivers down the spines of rival promoters throughout the United States. Ultimately defeated by wrestling (sorry, sports entertainment) emperor Vincent Kennedy McMahon, the NWA World Heavyweight Championship outlived its promotion and bounced through various companies including New Japan, TNA, ECW and ROH.

One of the oldest and most prestigious world titles in American wrestling history, it has been held by the likes of Ric Flair, Lou Thesz, Dusty Rhodes, A.J. Styles, Sting, Masahiro Chono and Terry Funk.

In 2019, and in the hands of ‘The National Treasure’ Nick Aldis, the title finally found a proper home once more when NWA Powerrr made its small screen debut. A show so old fashioned in its presentation that it feels brand new, Powerrr is proving to be a successful passion project for owner Billy Corgan and his roster of brawling bruisers.

In the current explosion of available weekly wrestling programs, let’s take a look at why NWA Powerrr is one of the best and brightest.

Here're are five reasons why you should be watching NWA Powerrr - second and third 'rs' are optional.

NWA Powerrr’s hour long, weekly instalments whiz by like Barry Allen on a sugar rush with their sprint-paced matches, colourful promos and total lack of dead (or near dead in many instances these days) air time. The fact the show goes for one hour in and of itself is a rarity in this age of two and three hour weekly shows topped off with pre-shows, post-shows and four plus hour pay per views every month.

In a time when too much is apparently never enough, NWA Powerrr stands out with its 'less is more' sensibilities and is far more streamlined in its presentation because of it.

This fast paced structure allows for stories to consistently move forward, devoid of repetition and/or the ever-dreaded 50/50 booking. More akin to a serialised TV series than WWE’s current, often meandering style of production, NWA Powerrr provides well produced narratives to drum up interest in its match-ups.

The irony of NWA Powerrr’s minimalist approach is that it leaves the viewer wanting more as opposed to less and this is something several promotions, WWE in particular, could do with learning.
