5 Ups And 2 Downs From Last Night's WWE SmackDown (Feb 7)

1. Champion Vs. Contender

John Cena Randy Orton

The main event of Smackdown was the advertised non-title (and non-sensical) match between WWE Champion John Cena and Royal Rumble winner Randy Orton. It was truly odd that this match was made, as not only does it give away that Cena won't be retaining his championship on Sunday, but in a kayfabe sense, there's no reason for it to be signed.

Despite all that, though, it was a good contest. The two didn't quite work it like a PPV main event, but they still tried to make it feel like more than just a regular TV match - Orton kicked out of an AA and Cena kicked out of an RKO. Soon there was a ref bump, and Cena made Orton tap to the STF, but of course, it wasn't registered. Orton's situation brought Bray Wyatt into the ring and Luke Harper followed, finally standing up to his former leader with a Discus Lariat. Cena then hit Orton with another AA, and the referee recovered just in time to count the pin.

This was a fun way to close out the show and the announcers did a good job putting it over like it was important, but let's be honest - this has about as much chance of happening at WrestleMania as AJ Styles versus Kenny Omega.
