Yes, that Stan Lane! Sweet Stan - of Midnight Express, Heavenly Bodies and Fabulous Ones fame - transitioned into a WWE commentator role when his full-time in-ring career in the early 90s due to a serious back injury.

The former NWA World Tag Team Champion say behind the booth with none other than Vince McMahon himself, calling Superstars from 1992 onwards. Again, like Heat, Superstars was a big deal at the time and could very well have been considered the number one show before Raw came along. Despite that fact, few remember Lane's announcing days.

After his stint on Superstars came to an end he began calling Wrestling Challenge in 1994, teaming up with the likes of Ted DiBiase and the legendary Gorilla Monsoon. He also did some voice over work and called matches that were exclusive to the Coliseum Home Video series. He also notably commented the second ever In Your House pay-per-view.

Although Lane and McMahon were initially friendly and had a good rapport, by the time he left in 1995 things were frosty between them and he departed on bad terms. In a 2005 interview Lane said they fell out over 'religious' difference, quipping that 'Vince thought he was God and I didn't'.

There's not really a general consensus as fare as Lane's commentary, but I quite enjoyed the (little) work of it that I've heard. He certainly had credibility going for him, if nothing else.
