It's a general rule of thumb that pretty much everybody has to lose or show weakness at some stage in their careers. Kurt Angle reportedly couldn't wrap his brain around that years before signing with WWE, and WCW struggled to find a suitable way to have Bill Goldberg do the honours elsewhere. Some characters/gimmicks should be protected properly.

Finding solutions without booking yourself into a corner is a must. Somebody needed to remind WWE of that heading into Extreme Rules 2021. They wanted to put all-conquering 'Tribal Chief' Roman Reigns up against Finn Bálor's 'Demon' guise on the PLE, but no-one could concoct a finish that'd both give Roman the win and protect Bálor's offshoot.

So they went with the worst plan imaginable.

Finn began convulsing on the floor at ringside as the lights flickered, then he got a second wind and looked ready to take Reigns out. What happened next? Did Roman move and shut Bálor down through skill? Did another fresh supernatural gimmick debut to cut the 'Demon' off? Nope. The turnbuckle broke, the top rope fell, Finn landed flat on his face, then Reigns beat him.

That was a wrap on the 'Demon' as an unstoppable attraction. One accidental ring breakage and a solitary spear was all it took to take him out. There was no going back for Finn's alter ego after this. It was even a talking point nearly two years later when Bálor went up against Edge inside Hell In A Cell at WrestleMania 39.

This finish should never have been put on air.
