29. The Early Stages Of The Bloodline

Roman Reigns nailed the heel character immediately. He really sunk his teeth into the material, leaving a massive impression - and a peroxide-based bleaching agent - on WWE storylines. Jey Uso eventually evolved into a headliner, or an upper midcarder WWE called a main eventer, with his good, sympathetic babyface work.

They were belatedly joined by Jimmy Uso, who was Nobody’s Bitch initially, before simply becoming Roman’s bitch with little in the way of explanation. What’s often lost about the first incarnation of the Bloodline is that the stable - before Sami Zayn elevated it with heartbreaking stakes and fun weekly levity - was carried almost entirely by Roman’s presence. The constant Usos interference dragged down Roman’s main events.

The dialogue was as bad as you’d expect under Vince McMahon, too. Back in May 2021, when Jimmy reappeared, he was leary of Roman’s manipulative ways. He said to Roman, on the 7th, “You won’t be talking to me like you talk to my brother Jey”.

OK, some notes.

The Usos are twins. They aren’t identical twins, but they look incredibly alike. It’s easy to infer that they are brothers, so the use of “my brother” there wasn’t necessary. Also: Roman is their cousin. He knew who his cousin was already, even if they hadn’t shared a WWE locker room for nine years by that point.

This was scripted as such because - yes! - Vince McMahon thinks you’re as thick as hell.
