The current predicament that Dolph Ziggler finds himself in will be all-too familiar to fans who watched with curiosity his 2016 Intercontinental Championship feud with The Miz, which also asked questions of his long-term WWE future.

Here, however, Ziggler didn't voluntarily throw in the towel. Instead, he laid it all on the line for one last shot at Miz's title at No Mercy, agreeing that - if he lost the match - he would retire from the ring, bringing an end to his decade-long association with the company.

To most fans, the creative team essentially had two options here. They could either have Ziggler win, and embark on a long and meaningful (or at least just meaningful) run with the belt. Alternatively, Ziggler could lose and head off on hiatus, returning under some loophole or other a few months later a new man.

In the end, they settled on option three: Ziggler wins, holds the belt for a month, and then drops it straight back to Miz (on an episode of SmackDown, no less). It meant that the significance of staking his career on the chance to be relevant again was completely lost, sending him back to square one in an instant.
