6 Ups & 6 Downs From WWE Raw (4 Sept - Results & Review)

4. Promos Sell The Main Event

Remember when major WWE matches were sold as big deals by the wrestlers themselves, talking about needing to win and capture gold in very earnest terms?

Sure, it still happens from time to time, but the selling of Monday’s main event Intercontinental Championship match throughout the evening was spot-on. Gunther and Chad Gable delivered pitch-perfect promos outlining the stakes, how there was much more at stake than just a title, more than even the IC title reign record.

For both men, it was about legacy and cementing their place in the history books, proving to themselves and everyone else that they belonged among the greats. Gunther spoke as the supremely confident champion who hasn’t been pinned in nearly two years, while Gable talked about his accomplishments and needing this one to really push him to the next level.

It was fuel for the main event and made it must-see television. When was the last time that really happened, especially for a mid-card title?
