6 Ups & 6 Downs From WWE Raw (July 26)

2. In The Conversation To Maybe Have An Opportunity Down The Line

If you need a really simple, yet profound, example of WWE writers’ utter stupidity, you can look no further than these “championship contenders matches” they’ve been holding recently.

In theory, this is a great idea, and this writer would love to give them credit. Ideally, it would work exactly how it sounds: if the challenger beats the champ in a non-title match, s/he would earn a title bout in the near future.

But despite billing it as such, the announcers tripped over themselves during the Damian Priest/Sheamus match to make sure we didn’t think anything was guaranteed, or even promised or implied.

Byron Saxton was the robot charged with spewing out the writers’ drivel: “If Priest can come up with a victory against Sheamus, you gotta believe Priest would be in line for a United States Championship opportunity.” And after Priest won: “Damian Priest has officially entered the conversation for a United States Championship opportunity.”

Seriously, who talks like this? He sounds like he’s having a seizure and just babbling random words. It’s utterly meaningless, and it makes a “contenders match” seem worthless. Just horribly awful stuff from this company.
