6 Ways WWE Can Save Apollo Crews
2. A Unique Gimmick Or Character
For some time, new recruits on Raw or SmackDown are given the same story: youngsters making a dream move to WWE and trying to make a name for themselves against the worlds best. Long live the American Dream. The problem is, different theme music aside, they are essentially the same characters. WWE is often at its best when the mid-carders try something fresh and new. Sometimes it flops, other times the risk pays off.
James Ellsworth is so damn popular as he is unlike anything else on WWE programming. He is unique. That is what Apollo Crews needs to be. I am not suggesting he surgically removes his chin. Nor am I suggesting he starts dressing like an astronaut and changes his finisher's name to the Moon Landing. That would be downright silly. But like so many others, Apollo needs to identify a gap in the market and make himself the sole representative of that crowd. Farooq and JBL did a great job of this when they transitioned from the Acolytes to the APA. They went from being a middle of the ground team to massively over - all achieved through fun back stage segments that raised a smile that put them over as a protective force. This made the interactions they had in the ring more meaningful, so every time their music hit the crowd anticipated what was about to go down.
The last thing WWE wants is stars who are average or boring. It almost doesn't matter what reaction a superstar gets as long as the fans engage with them. If Apollo keeps on his current safe course he may never become a top tier performer. If he rolls the dice now and try's something risky, we might just have a future megastar on our hands.
