John Cena won his first WWE Title when he was on the Smackdown brand in 2005. The previous champion was the evil John Bradshaw Layfield. When JBL tried to steal the WWE Title from Cena, he figured that meant that he (JBL) was still WWE Champion. Wrong. Cena was still the WWE Champion and he also had a new title made. The new WWE Spinner Title was similar to the US Title that Cena had made. It was WWE's way of showing that they were in the Cena era and they wanted to do something cool by giving Cena that would represent him. With Cena becoming the "face" of WWE, it made sense that a new title would debut shortly after he won his first major WWE Title. When Cena introduced the spinner WWE Title, we had no idea how long it was going to last. It turned out that it would stay until 2013 when a new WWE Title replaced it. The spinning part of it stopped years earlier, but the actual physical WWE Title was Cena's version of the gold for eight years. A big reason why it lasted eight years is because it was a popular item for fans to buy. If something is going to sell well then it makes sense to keep it around for a long time.
