7 Best Ways WWE Can Utilise Rumoured Returning Stars
3. Rey Mysterio
There is nothing for Rey Mysterio to achieve in WWE.
The masked luchador elevated himself to Hall of Fame glory based on the resume he compiled in Vince McMahon's promotion, where he captured the world heavyweight title on two separate occasions and battled Kurt Angle, Undertaker, CM Punk, Chris Jericho and the late Eddie Guerrero in some of the best matches of the new Millennium.
So why would Rey come back to the company that he left amid such contentiousness in 2014? Simple: one great last run.
Mysterio was essentially jobbed out on his way out of WWE. He wallowed in mediocrity while teaming with Sin Cara and dropping one-sided matches to Roman Reigns. He was a shell of his former self, a wrestler seemingly passed on by a new generation of stars.
As fans have seen through his work in Mexico, the independent scene and Lucha Underground, Mysterio can still go. Maybe not on a nightly basis, which was the case when he was under WWE contract but as a superstar reserved from television, he can be used to attract viewers while providing an extraordinary in-ring product alongside the likes of Seth Rollins, Dean Ambrose, Kevin Owens and the aforementioned Reigns.
There were questions about Mysterio's usefulness when he signed with WWE in 2002. Was he still a star after a disastrous close to his WCW career. The company made him one, putting him over through a series of video packages. Repeating that booking method would allow WWE to get another year or two out of the all-time great while providing name recognition at the top of Raw or SmackDown.
