Providing fans with a red herring can be an effective way to then punch supporters straight in the gut with a heel turn later on. Back before Survivor Series, Authority boss Triple H was trying to sweet talk Roman Reigns into joining his faction, even going so far as to rubbish previous golden boy Seth Rollins.

Reigns was having none of it, and won a WWE Title tournament set up because of Seth's injury on the pay-per-view against another fellow Shield member Dean Ambrose fair and square. Instead of the confetti WWE laid on to toast Roman's success, he could easily have grabbed the mic, thanked Triple H and revealed he was the new chosen one for The Authority.

The fans were already booing, because they didn't like the idea that goody-two-shoes Reigns had replaced a genuinely entertaining heel champion like Rollins. Replacing their unwanted babyface party for Roman with one much more devious would have been fun - though ironically, he probably would have drawn cheers for the turn.
