7 Reasons I Regret Staying Up To Watch WWE Payback 2016

5. The Chaotic Intercontinental Championship Situation

After Kevin Owens defeated Sami Zayn in their first main roster meeting, KO decided to stay at ringside and take on commentary duties for the Intercontinental Championship match between champion The Miz and Cesaro. Owens spoke of his desire to regain the IC strap, and as such spent the entire match dominating commentary reiterating his annoyance at the whole situation.

This led to Owens and Zayn continuing their battles at ringside, which eventually bled into the ring itself allowing Miz to roll up Cesaro for the cheap victory. All of this clearly was put together to set up a four-way between the combatants further down the line.

Putting such a situation on a PPV cheapens the title, as the actual title match between Cesaro and The Miz was secondary to the shenanigans outside the ring. The set up itself was fine, but it really should have been saved for RAW or SmackDown, not a PPV championship match.

The degradation of the importance of title matches on big shows continues.

Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man.
